October 3rd and 4th Weekend Shopping Extravaganza

Beginning on Saturday October 3rd at 12:00 AM EST, the Etsy Supply Street Team is hosting another "Weekend Shopping Extravaganza." This months event will run Saturday, October 3rd & Sunday October 4th, 2009. ALL ETSY SHOPS - HANDMADE, SUPPLIES AND VINTAGE - are invited to participate by placing an announcement in your shop and joining in with promoting on the "Official" Promotional thread in the Etsy Forums.

This will be a “Shopping Event” similar to a Public Marketplace. There will not be a "overall theme" since Etsy is a Global Marketplace hence, the seasons, cultures, holidays, etc. can vary quite a bit. Although not required, we do strongly encourage shops to have a feature, theme or sale as this can pique interest and help you to draw people to your shop.

Genuine Diamonds Beads have recently become available at affordable prices for Jewelry Designers and Beaders. Diamond beads add amazing sparkle and elegance to any design. A majority of these diamond beads are made from exotic colorful diamonds that are cut and faceted in India.

HISTORY: For many years colorless diamonds were the only diamonds readily available to the public. Their exorbitant prices reflect taste and fashion. Yet diamonds exist in over 300 colors and are actually rarer than colorless diamonds. Some of the most famous diamonds in history, like the Hope Diamond which is violet, have been colored diamonds.

GEOLOGY: Carbon-based gems are called diamonds and although it is not widely known, they come in many colors. Diamonds are the hardest substance known today. Many of the gems we find on earth are quartz related and their hardness does not exceed 7 on the scientific Mohs hardness scale which means they are more susceptible to environmental degradation. The scarcer minerals are those whose hardness exceeds 7 including emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds. These gems are also harder to find; it is said that 250 tons of minerals need to be excavated to find just 1 carat of diamond.

Black diamonds are particularly intriguing and many are believed to have been formed by meteor impacts. They derive their coloration from mineral inclusions, usually iron oxides such as magnetite, hematite, or sulfide compounds. Because their coloration is caused by inclusions rather than impurities, black diamonds have wonderful reflective qualities and fabulous sparkle.

You can also find diamond beads in platinum gray, cognac brown, canary yellow, champagne, citrus and other colors.

HERKIMER DIAMONDS are NOT Diamonds! Please be informed that these "diamonds" listed on-line are actually quartz crystals mined in New York. They are fabulously pretty and sparkling but don't confuse them with genuine diamonds.

FASHION and DESIGN: Naturally-colored diamonds are growing in popularity among designers and people who love beautiful gems. They have wonderful personality and have only recently become available as beads for jewelers and beaders. In order not to waste any of the precious material, diamond beads are most often drilled with tiny holes. 30 gauge wire (0.010") is recommended for stringing.

SHAPES: Diamond beads come in many shapes including faceted rondelles, briolettes and intriguing rough cut diamond nuggets. Diamond beads are generally priced by weight and cut; faceted rondelles and pipes will generally cost more per carat than rough cuts. Rough cuts or nuggets, which are amazingly affordable, really sparkle and also add natural luxury to your designs.

Antique Chinese Porcelain Pottery Shards

Antique Pottery Shards from China

Chinese porcelain pottery shards have become very popular jewelry collectibles. There are many places to buy them on-line including ebay where I offer a good selection.

Shards are often used in jewelry design and make bold additions to necklaces. The antique shards are newly framed in silver. They are an affordable way to wear miniature antiques!

Buyers should be aware, however, that many sellers are misrepresenting their shards as MING DYNASTY which would date them to 1368 until 1644 AD. I think most of these sellers do this inadvertently because they are not really knowledgeable about Chinese history. The pieces under $100 that are truly 400- 700 years old are extremely rare. In fact, I haven't seen any!

The pieces that are more readily available from China are really QING DYNASTY which date from 1644 to 1911. QING DYNASTY (also known as CHING or QIN) shards are at least 100 years old and are usually salvaged from old dumps and extinct porcelain factories in China.

There are many beautiful styles. You can find them in blue on white; many in graceful Chinese caligraphy. Others are colorful pieces of floral designs. Harder to find are the figural pieces representing scholars, dancers, women in kimonos, people in gardens and musicians. I have one importer who saves many of these for me.

You should choose shards that appeal to you in the same way that you evaluate art: buy what you like and a piece that gives you great aesthetic satisfaction!
